YOU’VE GOT THIS!

MEET THE MIDWIFE
birth, and child rearing were a beautiful blessing, and couldn’t wait to
experience it from any angle. Nancy was exposed to midwifery when living in
Kentucky, and there she knew she had found her true calling. When she
moved back to Alabama, out-of-hospital midwifery was still illegal, so she
worked as a labor and delivery nurse until the law was changed. She then
began her advanced training to become a midwife.
Today, Nancy is a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) through the North
American Registry of Midwives (NARM), a Licensed Midwife (LM) in the state
of Alabama, and a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Alabama. She keeps
up to date Basic Life Support and Neonatal Resuscitation credentials, as well
as Professional Liability Insurance. She has over 5 years experience as a
midwife and 5 years experience as an L&D and well-baby nurse.
Nancy is deeply committed to her clients. She is grounded in the midwifery
model, which focuses on client-centered and individualized care, with values
in authenticity, compassion, and vulnerability. She is drawn to supporting
and honoring people as they claim autonomy of their own pregnancy, birthing,
and postpartum experience as well as over their health and safety decisions.
Outside of her work as a midwife, Nancy has with her husband, 4 children (all
born at home with midwives), and their dog, Chester. Nancy is multi-talented
and can be found knitting, crocheting, sewing; or going to book club; or
tackling any new “project.”

Midwives Have Excellent Outcomes
Across our planet, eighty percent of people alive today have been born with midwives. In many of the industrialized countries of the world, midwives attend approximately 70% of all births. The countries with the lowest mortality and morbidity rates for mothers and infants are those in which midwifery is a valued and integral pillar of the maternity care system. The midwifery model is a low-tech, high-caring model that produces excellent outcomes not only for low risk clients, but for vulnerable and at-risk people as well.

Do you accept insurance?
Well, the question is more “Does insurance accept midwifery and homebirth?” And the short answer is, “rarely.” Alabama insurance providers and Alabama Medicaid still do not recognise Licensed Midwives or homebirth, thus reimbursement is extremely rare, if any. Know that all insurances are not equal, some cover hospital birth 100%, but most require a deductible and then a percentage, usually costing you $4,000+ for your hospital birth, but unfortunately you won’t know that until after the delivery and received bill. There are discounts and third party nancing options available, but also know (for future pregnancies) cost sharing companies like Samaritan Ministries, Liberty, Solidarity, Medishare, and Christian Healthcare Ministries are easier to work with than traditional insurance plans and most cover home birth.
